I wondered why a family acquaintance wasn’t taking about Ferguson. I mean at all. Anywhere online. And then, oh that’s right, her parents are both white cops. And she’s never been concerned with justice, just boozed up pool parties every weekend. Gotcha
Why are we associated? Oh duh. Church
Everything is weird
fauxsito asked: What do you do to deal with anger? Or at least, how do you keep it at a healthy level/not let it take over your life? People close to me are showing their true colors vis a vis issues of race & sex & I feel like I am about to burst into flame
There are a two things: Self Care & Picking Your Battles.
Self care is just so critical. The last 2 days I’ve had to take a break from following the updates from Ferguson live on Twitter. I spent time cooking for the week, went to an organizer meeting and a number of other things instead which have helped replenish me in many ways. I’ve also had to cancel a lot of engagements with white liberals which on a normal week would be painful but not excruciating, but now for my emotional health in the midst of everything I simply cannot do. These are all priorities I’ve made for my self care at this time.
The last point is around picking your battles. You have every right to be angry, and I am very angry much of the time now, but honestly some people are just not worth your energy. When a Latino “friend” of mine invalidated how I felt the other day, I knew where we stood and, after giving him a piece of my mind, I just disengaged. It is important to speak out, but some people are not worth your energy if they themselves are not willing to listen and be transformed by your words. Using your time and energy wisely and picking your battles is connected again to the question of self care, so keep all of that in mind. Hope that helps.
Being white means never having to think about it.

#which is why the term white privilege REALLY angers people#it’s the first time many people hear themselves categorized by race#suddenly they feel burdened by the idea their race defines them#just like the words straight and cis really anger people#because it makes them feel Othered for once#and it’s disconcerting#white privilege (skylikethat)
